International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
September 16 is the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
It was established to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Montreal Protocol. This year marks 35 years since the Protocol was adopted.
The theme
of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer in 2022 is “Montreal Protocol: global cooperation protecting life on earth”.
Global cooperation between countries and organizations has enabled effective action for the protection of the ozone layer. The Montreal Protocol is the best example of global environmental cooperation. Why is ozone layer protection so important?
The ozone layer absorbs up to 98% of all harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun.
It optimizes the temperature on Earth – protecting it from freezing or overheating. For the PROZON Foundation, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is also important for another reason!
The Foundation was established to protect the stratospheric ozone layer from the harmful effects of ozone-depleting substances known as ODS.
This is also the origin of our original name: “PROZON Ozone Layer Protection Foundation”.Foundation activities
From 1996 to 2015, the Foundation supported global cooperation for the protection of the ozone layer through activities such as the recovery and reclamation of ODS.
Currently, in accordance with Regulation 1005/2009 of 16 September 2009 on substances that deplete the ozone layer, the use and placing on the market of ODS is prohibited, and PROZON works to reduce the negative impact of fluorinated greenhouse gases on global warming.
